The Sandy Land Underground Water Conservation District is pleased to announce the 2002 Essay Scholarship Recipients

 

The Sandy Land Underground Water Conservation District would like to thank all the participants who entered this year’s “Scholarship Essay Contest”.  There were 43 essays entered in the competition.  We appreciate the teachers from Plains and Denver City High Schools who encouraged all these students to participate.

 

Kyndal Marie Eady

 

The $1,000.00 Scholarship Essay 2002 winner from Denver city is Kyndal Marie Eady.  She is the daughter of Brent and Darlene Eady.  She is 18 years old and a graduate of Denver City High School.  While in high school, she was active in the student council, serving as chairman of the energy committee as a junior and chairman of the safety committee and secretary as a senior.  Kyndal was also involved in the National Honor society for two years and served as president her senior year.  She was elected as a class officer for three years. 

As a senior, Kyndal was also a member of the yearbook and school newspaper staffs.  She participated in four UIL events, including news writing, feature writing, editorial writing and as a sophmore and senior in feature writing, placing third as a senior.  For three years, Kyndal also served as manager for the volleyball team.  In the fall, she will be attending Angelo State University.

 

Chris Hansen

 

Chris Hansen, son of Ed and Terri Hansen, is the Plains High School winner of the $1,000.00 scholarship.  Chris is a 2002 graduate of PHS and plans to attend Angelo State University in the fall.  He then hopes to receive an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

Chris has been very active in school events since moving to Plains three years ago.  He has participated in varsity football, baseball and power lifting.  He was a regional qualifier in power lifting in two weight classes for two years.  Also, he has been active in UIL events, including Math, Science, Number Sense, as well as being a regional qualifier in News Writing.  He was chosen to be a member of the National Honor Society and also attended Boy’s State.  He participated in the annual Quiz Bowl, and was voted by his classmates to be “Most Likely to Succeed” as well as having the “Best Smile”.  Chris has also been selected as “Student of the Week” on two occasions.  Chris attends the First Baptist Church in Plains.  He has a sister, Keri and a brother, Brent.

 

Jarryn Heather Mock

 

Jarryn Heather Mock is the daughter of Buddy and Kim Mock of Denver City and winner of the $500.00 scholarship.  She has two brothers, Jonathan and Justin, both of whom were Sandy Land Underground Water Conservation District Essay Contest winners.  Jarryn has been actively involved in Student Council for three years.  She served as Energy Chairman her sophomore year and Safety Chairman her junior year.  Her safety scrapbook placed first in the state, earning her a trip to Hawaii.  Jarryn was president of the student body her senior year.  She participated in UIL for three years in debate, prose, and one-act play.  Her senior year she was named best actress.  Jarryn was a cheerleader all through high school.  She served as captain her senior year and was selected to march in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.  Jarryn was chosen to be the student ambassador to the Denver City Chamber of commerce her senior year.  She was in National Honor society and top 5% during high school.  Jarryn graduated as the Valedictorian of her senior class.  She plans to attend Abilene Christian University where she will major in Biochemistry.  She will then pursue a career in pharmacy or speech pathology.

 

Jeffrey Lollar

 

Jeffrey Lollar is the Plains High School winner of the $500.00 scholarship.  He is eighteen years old and a 2002 graduate of PHS.  His parents are David and Jerri Lollar.  He also has a sister and brother-in-law, Jennifer and Drew Blessing, and a nephew, Harrison.  Jeffrey is a lifelong resident of Yoakum County.  In high school, Jeffrey played sports, including basketball and football.  He was also very involved in the Ag program, and was a member of Future Farmers of America.  He participated in Livestock Judging and Stock Shows.  When Jeffrey was a sophomore, he was awarded the Star Greenhand Award in Ag.  In his senior year, he received the Top Hand Award.  Jeffrey will attend Western Texas College in Snyder in the fall, where he plans to study Agricultural Science.  He would then like to attend Tarleton State University, after which he will pursue a career in agriculture and teaching.  Jeffrey attends First Baptist Church in Plains.
